Recent news reports indicate that former CES instructor Grant Palmer will be facing church discipline. Any time that church discipline comes into the news, the conversation inevitably turns to the secretive Strengthening Church Members Committee which is said to maintain files on church members suspected of intellectual improprities. In a recent and lengthy blog post, the Mormon Wasp collects and discusses information and statements about the Committee (including official church statements). Mormon Wasp’s post is very informative for anyone interested in reading on this topic.

Hmm. I published in Dialogue, I wonder if they have a file in me. At least three people read the article I guess.
They may have a file “in” me–but that is a bit too X-files. What I meant, of course, is a file ON me…
I am of the opinion that if the committee did not exist, Mormon intellectuals would have to invent it.
Perhaps that’s the best argument for not having the committee. Why waste church resources playing the heavy in various self-dramatizations?
Given the volatility of this topic and the recent downturn in comments in some other threads, I’m going to do as I probably should have from the start, and close comments here before they (potentially) get out of hand.
