Is this old news? The Church is now offering the Book of Mormon, D&C, General Conference, Church magazines, and certain other materials in MP3 format. The audio site is here. The Church’s website also has some downloads for handhelds, and music downloads. Check out the music player by clicking the name of the song you would like to hear. Pretty cool stuff.

I believe the new handheld section appeared this weekend. I first saw the mp3 materials archive sometime last week. Then there has been the Serving in the Church, and as menioned, Church Music sections both launched in the last couple of months.
I’m excited about these new resources. Now I hope the Church’s UK site will also get into high gear too soon.

The music downloads feature is only one of a number of really incredible features that the church’s new music site offers. I’ve been planning to do a lengthy review of the music site one of these days on BCC or Orson’s Telescope, when I get the time, because it’s really one of the most impressive music resources (by any institution) that I’ve encountered on the web.
I agree, Jeremy. I was pretty blown away by the sophistication of the music player. Unless I am missing something, the number of available hymns is pretty limited, but this is an impressive beginning.
I was rather sad when they froze the handheld content. I hope that the new reader is a better product — and I intend to register it — but, the gap in available material was pretty long.
Glad to see that they finally made a move.
I use the Pocket PC platform PDA (wow, that was downright Neal-Maxwellian!) from Dell and have had great success using the mp3′s in Bishopric meeting and elsewhere. I just connect wirelessly, download the opening song, and attach a pair of powered speakers I scrounged out of my personal computer graveyard (pentium 75 anyone?). Voila, instant accompaniment! I wish the mp3s were sampled at a higher bitrate (I think they’re about 32k versus the 128k I like) but they work for what they are.
I suppose I could even use them in Sacrament meeting should the pianist not make it one Sunday. The wireless coverage reaches the podium and I’d just have to run the audio through the sound system.
I was glad to see the Church align itself with Yanceyware. I had the new “True to the Faith” book in my PDA before the hard copies arrived!
“Is this old news?”
Yes it is. :-)
