As we settle into the Christmas season, our thoughts often turn to the gifts we can offer our community. In the spirit of the season—and as a small token of appreciation for the vibrant intellectual and spiritual discussions that take place here at Times and Seasons—I want to share a project I’ve been working on: a free online book titled A Beginner’s Guide to B. H. Roberts: Excerpts from the Writings of B. H. Roberts.
For many students of Latter-day Saint history, B. H. Roberts is a figure who looms large. Often called the “Defender of the Faith,” Roberts was a man of immense intellectual hunger and deep devotion. From his role in the First Council of the Seventy to his monumental work as the Church’s assistant historian, he shaped the way we tell our story. Yet, for those just starting to dive into the history of the Restoration, his massive bibliography—spanning from The Comprehensive History of the Church to The Mormon Doctrine of Deity—can feel more than a little daunting.
This compilation is intended to bridge that gap. It is, admittedly, an imperfect work, but its goal is simple: to provide a curated entry point into the mind of one of our tradition’s most significant thinkers. By gathering key excerpts and pivotal reflections, this guide offers a “tasting menu” of Roberts’ thoughts on theology, history, and the lived experience of faith. In addition, the biographical information, introduction, and bibliography I have written provide further context to Robers’ life and work.
Whether he was wrestling with the complexities of the Book of Mormon or articulating the expansive nature of the Plan of Salvation, Roberts never shied away from the difficult questions. In our current age, where we are often encouraged to seek quick answers, there is something profoundly Christ-centered about Roberts’ willingness to study, to struggle, and to remain “true to the faith” through it all.
I hope this resource serves as a helpful companion for your personal study or a starting point for those curious about the intellectual heritage of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Consider it a small Christmas present to the “blogernacle” and beyond.
