Lula was the editor of the Woman&#8217;s Exponent, a staunch defender of women&#8217;s right to vote, to obtain an equal education, and to choose their own occupations.  This poem comes from <i>Branches That Run Over the Wall<\/i>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAn Apology<\/p>\n<p>Did I stay too long in the school room<br \/>\n    After the lessons were through,<br \/>\nLeaving my mother and sisters<br \/>\n    With all the work to do?<br \/>\nAnd has it vexed you, mother,<br \/>\n    My mother, so patient and true?<\/p>\n<p>Forgive me, my mothers and sisters,<br \/>\n    Smile kindly and gently speak:<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll try to do better tomorrow<br \/>\n    And all the rest of the week,<br \/>\nIf my wayward mind and feelings<br \/>\n    Do not play me another freak.<\/p>\n<p>The children were hard to manage<br \/>\n    Heedless and dull today;<br \/>\nIt seemed they could think of nothing<br \/>\n    Except their love for play,<br \/>\nOut doors the birds and flowers<br \/>\n    And sunshine were all so gay.<\/p>\n<p>And after the lessons were ended<br \/>\n    They sought of youth&#8217;s charms the chief,<br \/>\nWhile to rest in the quiet school room<br \/>\n    Was to me a blessed relief<br \/>\nAnd the time slipped by unnoticed,<br \/>\n    The moments appeared so brief<\/p>\n<p>And I have been writing something<br \/>\n    Which will likely enough be read<br \/>\nBy our children&#8217;s children<br \/>\n     After we are all dead;<br \/>\nAnd must I think I should have been<br \/>\n     Washing dishes instead?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My thoughts this morning echo the words of a poem by Lula Greene Richards (1849-1944).
