{"id":8868,"date":"2009-07-10T15:20:07","date_gmt":"2009-07-10T20:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/?p=8868"},"modified":"2009-07-10T15:24:18","modified_gmt":"2009-07-10T20:24:18","slug":"misguided-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2009\/07\/misguided-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"Misguided faith?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There was a lot that I <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2009\/07\/edits\/\">liked about this month&#8217;s Ensign<\/a>; but one of the short articles bothered me. \u00a0It was the tithing article where the writer, a single mother of six, compared utility and mortgage bills to tithing, and then\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/ldsorg\/v\/index.jsp?hideNav=1&amp;locale=0&amp;sourceId=f0471d7888312210VgnVCM100000176f620a____&amp;vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD\">stated that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I would rather lose the water source to my house than lose the living water offered by the Savior. I would rather have no food on our table than be without the Bread of Life. I would prefer to endure the darkness and discomfort of no electricity than to forfeit the Light of Christ in my life. I would rather abide with my children in a tent than relinquish my privilege of entering the house of the Lord.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Is anyone else uncomfortable with the idea that it&#8217;s more important to pay tithing than to put a roof over one&#8217;s children&#8217;s heads? \u00a0<!--more-->Is the writer seriously saying that she would let her children starve on the streets, in order to continue her tithe?<\/p>\n<p>I realize that this is probably hyperbole. \u00a0The passage uses lots of scriptural symbolism as a writing device, perhaps figuratively; and besides, LDS welfare is quite effective, and it&#8217;s unlikely that her Bishop would actually let any of the children starve. \u00a0So maybe it&#8217;s just rhetoric. \u00a0But it&#8217;s still rhetoric that makes me uncomfortable<\/p>\n<p>Recent court cases have put a spotlight on families who refuse medicine in favor of faith healing, <a href=\"  http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/opinion\/content\/opinion\/epaper\/2009\/07\/09\/a12a_swan_col_0710.html\">sometimes with tragic results<\/a>. \u00a0Is it reasonable to rely on tithing or prayer to replace medicines or mortgage payments? \u00a0(I&#8217;m reminded of the time when I relied on prayer instead of study to help me through a college midterm, with predictably bad results.)<\/p>\n<p>At what point do we cross into the territory of misguided faith?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a lot that I liked about this month&#8217;s Ensign; but one of the short articles bothered me. \u00a0It was the tithing article where the writer, a single mother of six, compared utility and mortgage bills to tithing, and then\u00a0stated that: I would rather lose the water source to my house than lose the living water offered by the Savior.
