Turley Jr. will be among the many speakers at this year&#8217;s BYU Church History Symposium. \u00a0The event is free, open to the public, and requires no registration. \u00a0 More information can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/preservinghistory.php\" target=\"_blank\">symposium web page<\/a>. \u00a0 Full announcement below. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><em><span><strong>Preserving the History of the Latter-day Saints<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>On <strong>Friday, February 27, 2009<\/strong>, BYU Religious Studies Center will convene the fourth annual Brigham Young University Church History Symposium, <em>Preserving the History of the Latter-day Saints<\/em>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0Elder Marlin K. Jensen, Church historian and recorder, will be the keynote speaker for the symposium.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Assistant Church historian and recorder Richard E. Turley Jr. will also speak, together with a host of scholars\u2014historians, archivists, editors\u2014from the Joseph Smith Papers Project, the Church History Department, and Brigham Young University.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>A cornucopia of presentations is planned, each treating some aspect of preserving Church history generally, regionally, locally, internationally, institutionally, or individually.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0The revealed commission to preserve the Church\u2019s history is as old as the restored Church.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It has been taken seriously ever since, but never have more resources been committed to it than there are today.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And never have there been more exciting efforts under way to preserve Latter-day Saint history. The ongoing publication of the <em>Joseph Smith Papers<\/em> and the construction of the state-of-the-art Church History Library typify the accelerating effort to fulfill the revealed commission to preserve Church history.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0More than twenty dynamic speakers are slated, including Mark Ashurst-McGee on \u201cJoseph Smith\u2019s Journal Keeping and the Creation of His History,\u201d Jill Mulvay Derr and Carol Cornwall Madsen on \u201cThe New Mormon Women\u2019s History, 1872\u20141985,\u201d Matthew Heiss on \u201cThe LDS Church\u2019s Evolving Program to Document the Church around the World,\u201d Jared Tamez on \u201cThe 1901\u20141908 Minutes of the Atlautla Mexico Branch,\u201d and Reid L.
