{"id":4739,"date":"2008-08-20T17:17:28","date_gmt":"2008-08-20T21:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/?p=4739"},"modified":"2009-01-20T12:44:44","modified_gmt":"2009-01-20T16:44:44","slug":"hot-mormon-gossip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2008\/08\/hot-mormon-gossip\/","title":{"rendered":"Hot Mormon Gossip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Has the Church <em>really <\/em>made an unsolicited offer to buy Facebook (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brimdeforest.com\/post\/46659600\/mormon-church-makes-bid-to-acquire-facebook\">here<\/a> which spun off to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestandard.com\/news\/2008\/08\/20\/lds-church-rumored-have-offered-facebook\">here<\/a>)?  <!--more-->It&#8217;s hard for me to swallow that the Church would be willing to cough up the billions needed to acquire the social-networking site, and it&#8217;s even harder for me to believe that Facebook is entertaining any such purported offer after having brushed off buyouts from some pretty <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2006\/12\/17\/22-yearold-facebook-fo_n_36540.html\">big guns <\/a>over the past few years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/25\/technology\/25facebook.html?_r=1&#038;oref=slogin\">and sold<\/a> a <em>1.6% stake<\/em> to Microsoft for <em>$240 million<\/em>.  Assuming for the moment that this rumor has some truth to it&#8230; why would the Church even consider this?  Is it really that much of a genealogical gold mine?  Wouldn&#8217;t privacy advocates be pitching fits over any use of that kind of data for Church purposes?  What about other faiths?
