The symposium will convene at Brigham Young University (October 24) and at the Church History Library in Salt Lake City (October 25). Keynote speakers include Young Women General President Emily Freeman, and Young Men General President Steven J. Lund, and Dr. Monica Mercado, Professor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Women\u2019s Studies and North American Religions at Colgate University.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We invite scholars of varied backgrounds and career stages to submit proposals addressing the broad theme of \u201cThe Young Women and Young Men Organizations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\u201d Topics that could be explored under this theme include, but are not exclusive to, the following:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early Latter-day Saint youth programs in Nauvoo<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founding stories of the Young Women and Young Men organizations in Utah<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutional and administrative history of the Young Men and Young Women organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evolution in youth programs, names, ages, values, mottos, slogans, logos, themes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Material culture of Latter-day Saint youth\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth curriculum, magazines, manuals, and handbooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Strength of Youth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pamphlet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth modesty standards, such as music, dancing, and dress and grooming<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latter-day Saint youth and religious practice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Women camp (formerly girls\u2019 camp)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boy Scouts of America<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth conferences, pioneer trek, Especially for Youth, and For the Strength of Youth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship between Young Men and Aaronic Priesthood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship between Young Women and Relief Society<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth and the global Church<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public perceptions of Latter-day Saint youth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latter-day Saint youth in comparative context\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sermons by Church leaders on \u201cthe rising generation\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latter-day Saint youth and Church responses to countercultural movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Women representation at the National Women\u2019s Council at the New York World\u2019s Fair<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proposals should consist of a brief abstract (no more than 500 words) and a current one-page CV. Proposals may be sent to <\/span><a href=\"mailto:church_history_symposium@byu.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">church_history_symposium@byu.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadline for submission is January 13, 2024. Notification of acceptance will be given by February 1, 2024.
