Outside of the realm of \u201cMormon Studies\u201d very few scholars or historians want to touch Latter-day Saints (except for polemical reasons \u2013 Jon Krakauer and Sally Denton have tackled \u201cMormons\u201d, but for polemical and intellectually suspect reasons).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve noticed this as well.\u00a0 In a book I reviewed for the AML many years ago <em>Class and Race in the Frontier Army<\/em>, the only real mention of Utah was the Salt Lake Tribune objecting to a Black army officer on fairly racist grounds.\u00a0 \u201cMormons\u201d as such are barely acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, there are few Cowboy or Western songs about Mormons; <a href=\"https:\/\/parentseyes.arizona.edu\/node\/584\">\u201cThe Mormon Cowboy\u201d is one happy exception.\u00a0<\/a> However, I have recently discovered an artist that does fill this gap: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/4386749-Stan-Bronson?type=Releases&amp;subtype=Albums&amp;filter_anv=0\">Stan Bronson<\/a> (a chance find \u2013 I bought a copy of his CD \u201cSongs of Old San Juan\u201d at Deseret Industries).\u00a0 <!--more-->There\u2019s not a lot of information on him online, but while he\u2019s apparently a member of the Church, his songs are not celebratory or faith-affirming as you might expect from a regional artist aimed mostly at the LDS and\/or intermountain west audience.\u00a0 \u201cBishop of Old San Juan\u201d comes the closest to a \u201cfaith affirming\u201d song, but other songs (such as \u201cCowboys, Indians, and Mormons\u201d) acknowledge a darker side to the history of Mormons in the West.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.scdn.co\/image\/ab67616d0000b273fbbc4fdcb38bb7208f1bc1eb\" alt=\"Stan Bronson | Spotify\" \/><br \/>\nI don\u2019t have much more to say, or anything profound.\u00a0 Just putting Stan Bronson\u2019s name out there for those unaware of him.\u00a0 Hopefully more awareness of him can help start filling that hole in Cowboy\/Western music.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people have said there\u2019s a gigantic hole in Western US studies\/histories.
