I hope nobody faults me for not using the name of the Savior when\u00a0talking about horror cinema or <\/i><a style=\"font-style: italic;\" href=\"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2023\/05\/dear-non-mormons-soaking-is-not-a-thing\/\">seedy urban legends<\/a><i>. \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorry for another AI post, but I feel like aliens landed in the Rose Garden and only half the country is talking about it, so readers will have to bear with my preoccupation for a bit longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the use cases of AI I\u2019ve seen bantered about is as an idea generator, and I wanted to see how well it did in regards to Mormon fiction and cinema. Of course, ideas are cheap, and any author or moviemaker worth their salt has hundreds of ideas in their head, it\u2019s getting the ideas to sing that is the hard part. Still, I wanted to see if GPT-4 just spat out cliched plot lines or was really capable of creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It looks like it\u2019s mostly the former. Specifically, it looks like a pastiche of common tropes mashed together with Mormon themes. Still, the bar for novelty these days is quite low, and there are some gems that are intriguing, so in theory this could be useful for idea generation if one is willing to wade through multiple outputs. I\u2019ve posted the entire prompt lists below, but the ones I think have the most potential are the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cSpiritual Quantums\u201d<\/strong> invokes an interesting thought experiment. If we get to the point where feelings can be manufactured, what is the function of natural or manufactured spiritual sentiment?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I haven\u2019t read a ton of Mormon fiction, but I assume that the idea of interplanetary missions has been done to death. The idea of time-traveling missionaries (<strong>\u201cTemporal Missionaries\u201d<\/strong>) going back in time three Nephites-like to help the early Church is more clever (e.g. the handcart pushing angels were missionaries from the future).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cTemple Square\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cThe Silent Prayer\u201d<\/strong> could be quite touching in the hands of a skilled writer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&#8220;Darkness in the Sacred Grove&#8221;<\/strong> sounds like a Brian Evenson short story.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of a cursed, monkey\u2019s paw-type seerstone (<strong>\u201cUnholy Seer\u201d<\/strong>) is intriguing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Mormon version of <strong>\u201c<\/strong>The Exorcist<strong>\u201d<\/strong> sounds fun (<strong>\u201cDemonic Disruption\u201d<\/strong>). Maybe it\u2019s been done already.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cDeseret Unchained\u201d<\/strong> just sounds like a Porter Rockwell biopic. Still, a Quintin Tarantino Porter Rockwell biopic would be pretty awesome.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the themes don\u2019t make sense (I\u2019m not sure what a \u201ctemple heist\u201d is, or why a seminary teacher would need a stunt double).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cKill Cain\u201d<\/strong> could work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cDjango Unbaptized\u201d<\/strong> made me LOL.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the Terrence Malik Mormon films could work in the hands of a Terrence Malik (especially \u201c<strong>The Thin Veil<\/strong>,\u201d \u201c<strong>To the Wonder: Temple Square<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201c<strong>Knight of Faith<\/strong>\u201d in particular\u2013and yes, I know these are very slightly modified derivatives of some of his actual films).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So could AI be useful for fiction writers? The threat has become real enough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/may\/26\/hollywood-writers-strike-artificial-intelligence\">that striking Hollywood writers are concerned<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but I think it\u2019s clear that it is more of a potentially useful tool than a replacement for a skilled, sophisticated writer.
