{"id":43520,"date":"2022-09-26T06:31:12","date_gmt":"2022-09-26T11:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.timesandseasons.org\/?p=43520"},"modified":"2023-06-20T12:31:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T19:31:18","slug":"padre-nuestro-en-el-cielo-mexico-mission-hymns-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2022\/09\/padre-nuestro-en-el-cielo-mexico-mission-hymns-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Padre Nuestro en el Cielo: Mexican Mission Hymns, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Note: This is a part of an ongoing series, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/notable-series\/the-mexican-mission-hymns-project\/\">Mexico Mission Hymns Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Hymn Text:<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/singpraises.net\/texts\/es\/5991\/our-father-in-heaven\">Padre Nuestro en el Cielo<\/a> by Manrique Gonz\u00e1lez was one of the earliest-published Spanish hymns in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\u00a0 It was published in the 1907 Mexican Mission <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.utah.edu\/details?id=291106\"><em>Himnario Morm\u00f3n<\/em><\/a> (p. 57, see Figure 1) and in the 1912 editions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org\/assets\/a853406f-3803-4c1e-9661-57608d55348c\/0\/45\"><em>Himnos de Sion<\/em><\/a> (p.44).\u00a0 It was cut from subsequent editions of the hymnbook (1927 onwards).\u00a0 Textual changes between the two editions it was included in are minor, consisting solely of punctuation alterations (see Table 1).\u00a0 According to the 1912 edition, the hymn was to be sung to the tune of hymn 37 in the English-language <em>Songs of Zion<\/em>, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/songszionacolle00saingoog\/page\/n42\/mode\/2up?view=theater\">\u201cWe are Sowing\u201d<\/a> by H. A. Tucket (8.7.8.7 D).\u00a0 Oddly, the hymn tune fits two verses of the hymn at a time, but there are 5 verses of the hymn, which doesn\u2019t work out math-wise.\u00a0 In addition, the syllables do not completely align with the music as written.\u00a0 As a result, I wonder if there was a typo in the 1912 edition where it indicated which tune to sing the song to.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43521 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.timesandseasons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Padre-Nuestro-1907.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Padre-Nuestro-1907.jpg 480w, https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Padre-Nuestro-1907-360x587.jpg 360w, https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Padre-Nuestro-1907-260x424.jpg 260w, https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Padre-Nuestro-1907-160x261.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Figure 1. <\/strong>The text of \u201cPadre Nuestro en el Cielo\u201d in the 1907 <em>Himnario Morm\u00f3n<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The author, Manrique Gonz\u00e1lez (1880 \u2013 1976), was initially from Nadores, Coahuila, Mexico.\u00a0 He left home when he was 14 years old, living first with an uncle in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico and later in San Pedro.\u00a0 While working for railroad contractors from the United States, he became acquainted with Latter-day Saints and was impressed with them.\u00a0 After completing his work on the railroad, he moved to the Latter-day Saint settlement of Colonia Juarez, where he would live through most of the remainder of his life.\u00a0 He was baptized on September 2, 1899 by John C. Harper and confirmed the following day by Anthony W. Ivins.\u00a0 He later noted that it was &#8220;the happiest day of my life.\u00a0 I was no longer alone, I had brothers and sisters who cared for me and were interested in my welfare.\u00a0 I felt bound to the community in every way.\u201d\u00a0 He attended school, graduating from the Sarah Clayson\u2019s Primary Department in 1903, and was offered a position as a Spanish teacher at the Juarez Academy that same year.\u00a0 He continued his education at Juarez Academy while teaching there, becoming the first Mexican citizen to graduate from the Academy in 1910.\u00a0 Due to the Mexican Revolution, he fled the colony in 1912, settling in Logan, Utah.\u00a0 There, he studied at the Agricultural College (now Utah State University) and earned the credentials to head an experimental agricultural station.\u00a0 He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in New Mexico for a few years (where he developed the New Mexico Pinto Bean) before returning to Colonia Juarez, where he applied his skills in raising the standards in farming.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is likely that he wrote &#8220;Padre Nuestro en el Cielo&#8221; during his that &#8220;We are Sowing&#8221; was the actual tune that this hymn was sung to because it doesn&#8217;t fit the music very well.\u00a0 Regardless, I&#8217;ve attempted to make it fit the music and reused the second verse at the end to take the full space.\u00a0 As such, this is the best I can figure as to what the hymn might have looked like if published with music in 1912:<\/p>\n<p><img
