In September of 2014, the Church put out an announcement that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/church\/news\/general-conference-speakers-now-can-use-native-language?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General Conference Speakers Now Can Use Native Language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d! But it didn\u2019t last long. A year later, a Church spokesperson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kutv.com\/news\/local\/lds-church-no-conference-talks-in-native-languages-this-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told a news outlet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the First Presidency had \u201cdecided that all talks for this weekend&#8217;s sessions will be given in English.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you know where to look, you can still hear many leaders speaking in their own languages. Since long before 2014, some leaders have pre-recorded their talks in other languages, usually (but not always) in their native language. I remember Elder Richard G. Scott talking about prerecording his talks in Spanish when he visited my mission in the Dominican Republic in the 1990s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I relistened to the October 2021 General Conference, I checked for every leader who seemed like she or he might have a different native language. I found seven examples of leaders giving talks in their home tongues. (When you listen to the talk, if it\u2019s interpreted, then you can still hear the English track faintly in the background; not so with the prerecorded talks.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to refresh your General Conference study and you speak another language, here are some opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9lder Ulisses Soares, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2021\/10\/14soares?lang=por\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A eterna compaix\u00e3o do Salvador<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Portuguese). The talk is \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2021\/10\/14soares?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Savior\u2019s Abiding Compassion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in English. Elder Soares also recorded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2021\/10\/14soares?lang=spa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his talk in Spanish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9lder Patricio M. Giuffra, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2021\/10\/17giuffra?lang=spa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Una b\u00fasqueda con fe, que fue recompensada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Spanish). Revillo Jr. of the Philippines, Elder Vaiangina Sikahema of Tonga, or Elder Elder Alfred Kyungu\u2014did not prerecord their talks.
