For many liberals, the issue is relatively unimportant, compared with, say, war in Iraq, federal judiciary appointments, drilling in Alaska, and deprivation of civil liberties under the Patriot Act.  Meanwhile, for many conservatives, gay marriage seems to be the most important issue.
