Modernism brought us the renaissance, modern\u00a0science, the birth of the modern state and democracy, as well as, ultimately,\u00a0what Nietzsche called \u201cthe death of God.\u201d In the twentieth century, questions\u00a0arose about modernism, such as \u201cHow should we understand its\u00a0grand narratives?\u201d\u00a0and \u201cWhat have been its costs to human being?\u201d Recognizing both modernism\u2019s difficulties\u00a0and achievements, if we cannot\u00a0think against or beyond modernism, can with\u00a0think within it?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This seminar for graduate students, postdoctoral\u00a0fellows, and not-yet tenured faculty will explore the emergence of modernism and\u00a0its\u00a0eventuation in what is often called \u201cpostmodern\u201d thought. We will\u00a0ask if Mormon thought should be understood as part of or in contrast to\u00a0modernism. Do we have any unique responses to the issues that arise? James E.\u00a0Faulconer (Professor of Philosophy, BYU) will direct.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The seminar will run weekdays from <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_689379812\"><span class=\"aQJ\">11\u00a0through 29 July<\/span><\/span> (except for <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_689379813\"><span class=\"aQJ\">25 July<\/span><\/span>, a state holiday).
