{"id":3092,"date":"2006-04-17T09:18:46","date_gmt":"2006-04-17T14:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/?p=3092"},"modified":"2006-04-17T09:19:24","modified_gmt":"2006-04-17T14:19:24","slug":"whats-the-mormon-est-surname","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2006\/04\/whats-the-mormon-est-surname\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s the Mormon-est Surname?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back I stumbled upon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/\">this website <\/a>that allows you to map the prevalence of  a given surname, by state, in the United States for the years 1850, 1890, 1920, and 1990. <!--more--> Of course, I immediately thought of looking at which names are most disproportionately represented in Utah and adjacent states, with the goal of identifying uniquely (Utah-) Mormon names.  <\/p>\n<p>I used maps for 1920, when Mormons had had some time to settle and reproduce, but were still highly concentrated in the mountain west. Let&#8217;s start with maps for some likely suspects:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Smith&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Young&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Young<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Kimball&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Kimball<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm, not too impressive&#8230;.let&#8217;s try some T&#038;S permabloggerish names:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Oman&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Oman<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Haglund&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Haglund<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Harris&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Harris<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Welch&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Welch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Evans&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Evans<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Call&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Call<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still mostly disappointing, with the except for Call, which looks pretty Mormon.  How about,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Cannon&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Cannon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Tanner&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Tanner<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Allred&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Allred<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still not so great.  Let&#8217;s try,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Merrill&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Merrill<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Hinckley&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Hinckley<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Pratt&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Pratt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re getting somewhere&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the end, after a non-exhaustive and un-systematic search, I announce that my nominations for the award for  Mormon-est name go to:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Romney&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Romney<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamrick.com\/names\/names.cgi?surname=Nielsen&#038;year=1920&#038;type=html\">Nielsen<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(We&#8217;ll see if the Massachusetts governor finds it as easy to capture the Republican nomination as it was for his name to capture this nomination.)<\/p>\n<p>P.S. &#8211; Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spatial-literacy.org\/UCLnames\">similar site<\/a> for counties in Britain.
