They have complete access to the LDS.org library, but (per their mission president&#8217;s wishes) little else in terms of reading\/enrichment material. I keep mentioning different books, as is my wont (see <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2011\/09\/books-of-interest-to-the-lds-nerd\/\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/books-a-small-timely-plug\/\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/genesis-vs-science-background-readings-and-discussion\/\">here<\/a>), and telling them &#8220;all you need to do is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/oneeternalround\/2011\/03\/quotes-of-note-presidents-hinckley-and-uchtdorf-on-books-and-reading\/\">read<\/a>,&#8221; so they&#8217;ve been frustrated at the apparent lack of access to &#8220;the good stuff.&#8221;\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So I told them, &#8220;Go read the old Ensigns. There&#8217;s great stuff back then, and they&#8217;re all on LDS.org.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2013\/11\/on-missions-books-and-seriously-going-off-the-deep-end-plus-a-paean-to-my-second-mp\/\">Those old Ensigns kept me intellectually alive until I was able to read other material<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For a starter list on history, doctrine, and things of interest, all of which I found on my mission,\u00a0I offered the following, with appropriate caveats about this being introductory material, written for a certain audience, may have errors, potentially 20-30 years outdated, etc., but better than nothing, esp. for a missionary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bruce Hafen, &#8220;Dealing With Uncertainty&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1979\/08\/on-dealing-with-uncertainty?lang=eng\">Ensign, August 1979<\/a>. Really an excellent one, <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2011\/11\/quotes-of-note-elder-hafen-on-independence\/\">I&#8217;ve highlighted it before<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>James Allen, &#8220;Line Upon Line.&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1979\/07\/line-upon-line?lang=eng\">July 1979<\/a>. Another really excellent one. I love that his examples are not common. He talks about Adoption and rebaptism, for example.<\/li>\n<li>Hugh Nibley 4-part on Atonement, starting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1990\/07\/the-atonement-of-jesus-christ-part-1?lang=eng\">July of 1990<\/a>. This was republished by FARMS as one piece.<\/li>\n<li>John Sorenson &#8220;Digging Into the Book of Mormon: Our Changing Understanding of Ancient America and Its Scripture&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1984\/09\/digging-into-the-book-of-mormon-our-changing-understanding-of-ancient-america-and-its-scripture?lang=eng\">Sept 1984<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1984\/10\/digging-into-the-book-of-mormon-our-changing-understanding-of-ancient-america-and-its-scripture-part-2?lang=eng\">October 1984<\/a>. Precursor to his book.<\/li>\n<li>Stephen Robinson, &#8220;Believing Christ&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1992\/04\/believing-christ?lang=eng\">April 1992<\/a>. Precursor to his two books.<\/li>\n<li>Gerald Lund, &#8220;Countering Korihor\u2019s Philosophy&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1992\/07\/countering-korihors-philosophy?lang=eng\">July 1992<\/a>. Introduced me to &#8220;epistemology&#8221; and &#8220;axiom.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Russel Rich &#8220;Nineteenth-Century Break-offs&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1979\/09\/nineteenth-century-break-offs?lang=eng\">Sept 1979<\/a>. All about early conflict over who would follow Joseph Smith.<\/li>\n<li>Elder Oaks &#8220;Recent Events Involving Church History and Forged Documents&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1987\/10\/recent-events-involving-church-history-and-forged-documents?lang=eng\">Oct 1987<\/a>. Kevin won an award for this one, back when they used to hold contests and give awards.<\/li>\n<li>Sidney Sperry &#8220;Hebrew Manners and Customs&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1972\/05\/hebrew-manners-and-customs?lang=eng&amp;query=Hebrew\">May 1972<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Stephen Robinson &#8220;Background for the Testaments&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/ensign\/1982\/12\/background-for-the-testaments?lang=eng&amp;query=stephen+E.+ricks\">Dec 1982<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Defining &#8220;best&#8221; more or less however you want, what are the best older (and therefore probably unknown) Ensign articles? Let&#8217;s limit it to the actual Ensign, instead of earlier Church magazines, and focus on the positive and best articles, not the evolution of the Ensign (on which see <a href=\"http:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2014\/02\/14\/leaving-a-changed-magazine-behind\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2014\/02\/20\/youll-get-the-type-of-church-members-you-write-for-8-suggestions-for-the-ensign\/\">here<\/a>) or articles that aren&#8217;t, well, \u00a0the best.
