The older it is, the more likely.)<\/p>\n<p>I think the two defining characteristics of <em>Religious Educator<\/em> are its intended audience (<del>CES<\/del> S&amp;I faculty and anyone else who subscribes) and content (attempting an academic\/devotional hybrid.) I suspect many readers would not expect anything serious from such a description, but it has some real gems and sometimes pushes boundaries in a good way (particularly considering the intended audience.) A sampling-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eric Huntsman&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-6-number-1-2005\/teaching-through-exegesis-helping-students-ask-questions-text\">&#8220;Teaching Through Exegesis: Helping Students Ask Questions of the Text&#8221; 6:1 (2005)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Richard Bushman&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-1-number-1-2000\/little-narrow-prison-language-rhetoric-revelation\">&#8220;The Little Narrow Prison of Language: The Rhetoric of Revelation&#8221; 1:1 (2000)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Hoskisson and Davis, <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-14-number-1-2013\/usage-title-elohim\">&#8220;Usage of the Title Elohi<\/a>m&#8221; (which points out that our modern usage is <em>not<\/em> identical to the scriptural usages, something many don&#8217;t understand) 14:1 (2013)<\/li>\n<li>Gaye Strathearn&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-14-number-1-2013\/crucifixion-reclamation-cross\">&#8220;Crucifixion: Reclamation of\u00a0the Cross&#8221; 14:1 (2013)<\/a> which gives some background and argues for the relevance of cross symbolism in LDS thought.<\/li>\n<li>Mark Ellison&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-13-number-3-2012\/paul-and-james-faith-and-works\"> &#8220;Paul and James on Faith and Works&#8221; 13:3 (2012)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/story-judah-and-tamar\">My own relatively short article<\/a> on understanding what&#8217;s going on in the sordid story of\u00a0Tamar seducing her father-in-law.<\/li>\n<li>John C. Thomas&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-10-number-2-2009\/sweetwater-revisited-sour-notes-and-ways-learning\">&#8220;Sweetwater Revisited, Sour Notes, and the Ways of Learning&#8221; 10:2 (2009)<\/a> Thomas reflects on his experiences teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/byustudies.byu.edu\/showtitle.aspx?title=7194\">Chad Orton&#8217;s BYU Studies article<\/a> about what actually happened the day three boys supposedly were guaranteed salvation after death from exposure in carrying pioneers across an icy\u00a0river. This is a great look at how to teach history that conflicts with tradition.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/archived\/volume-14-number-3-2013\/start-faith-conversation-elder-steven-e-snow\">An interview with Elder Stephen Snow<\/a>, the\u00a0new Church Historian\u00a0in charge of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lds.org\/topics\">Gospel Topics<\/a> pages that are so <a href=\"http:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2013\/12\/06\/responses-to-gospel-inquiries\/\">talked<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/bycommonconsent.com\/2013\/12\/08\/were-church-leaders-wrong\/\">about<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2013\/12\/gospel-topics-at-lds-org\/\">right<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865592128\/LDS-Church-enhances-web-pages-on-its-history-doctrine.html?pg=all\">now<\/a>. (Not yet available, but Blair Hodges at the Maxwell Institute published <a href=\"http:\/\/maxwellinstitute.byu.edu\/truth-in-church-history-excerpts-from-the-religious-educators-qa-with-elder-steven-snow\/\">a tantalizing \u00a0preview<\/a>. There&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/sunday-school\">Sunday School index<\/a> (still\u00a0D&amp;C on the page) that lists relevant articles for each\u00a0Gospel Doctrine lesson, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/rsc.byu.edu\/priesthood-relief-society\">similar index for RS\/PH lessons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The January 2014 issue prints an article I wrote, which started <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2012\/05\/reading-the-bibles-the-problem-part-1\/\">here at T&amp;S<\/a>, about why Bible translations differ, some challenging questions about the nature of scripture and translation (particularly when scripture challenges our expectation of holiness), some lengthy suggestions on personal study, and an evaluation of the relevance of the\u00a0Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith Translation for deciding between textual differences. The personal study suggestions are more in-depth than in <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2013\/12\/old-testament-gospel-doctrine-reading-and-resources\/\">my post here<\/a>. The RSC policy is to put up electronic editions about a year after paper publication, but I have permission to post it online.
