Indeed, I expect that her experience will be quite different from mine. While I went to BYU as a religious minority, this young woman will find herself part of the majority religion for the first time. Will that create any special challenges for someone whose self-image seems to be strongly tied to her status as a religious minority?

The larger issue, I suppose, relates to the similarity of those who experience Mormonism as a majority religion to those of us who experience Mormonism primarily as a minority religion. Framing the discussion in that way might be more fruitful because it can avoid some of the peculiarities of BYU within the majority culture.

Then again, I am less interested in the abstract question because that young woman is my daughter.

Imagine an LDS woman, 18 years old, who has lived her entire life far from the centers of Mormonism.
