The 7th D&amp;C gospel doctrine lesson talks about faith, repentance, baptism and the gift of the holy ghost. In teaching these principles and ordinances, the focus should remain on Christ.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I believe this poem does that. While I&#8217;ve not yet discovered exactly who the author, &#8220;G. H.,&#8221; is, I suspect the author is Gustavus Hills, who worked on the <em>Times and Seasons<\/em> when this was published. But I do not know for sure.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">I would see Jesus<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">By <em>G. H.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<dl>\n<dd>When streams of pleasure gently flow,<\/dd>\n<dd>And skies are clear, and comforts glow;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all prosperity, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>To Jesus turn my grateful eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Or should the storms of sorrow lower,<\/dd>\n<dd>Afflictions pain, temptations pour;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all adversity, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>To Jesus turn my patient eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>When healthful flows the tide of life,<\/dd>\n<dd>And strength is firm, and vigor rife;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all activity, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus fix my cheerful eye<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Or should diseases rack my frame,<\/dd>\n<dd>Or pains distract, or fevers flame;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all my sicknesses, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>To Jesus life my languid eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>When in the sacred courts I tread,<\/dd>\n<dd>And bow the knee, or lift the head;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all the ordinances, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus fix my faithful eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Or when the friendly throng I meet,<\/dd>\n<dd>And heart meets heart, and friendships greet;<\/dd>\n<dd>In social intercourse, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus keep my loving eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>When death shall spread his sombre shade,<\/dd>\n<dd>And life shall cease, and earth shall fade;<\/dd>\n<dd>In the departing hour, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus fix my hopeful eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>And when the happy millions meet,<\/dd>\n<dd>And waive their palms at Jesus&#8217; feet;<\/dd>\n<dd>Through all eternity would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus keep my joyful eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Times and Seasons<\/em>, 15 January 1842<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The relevant stanza for this lesson is the fifth:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>When in the sacred courts I tread,<\/dd>\n<dd>And bow the knee, or lift the head;<\/dd>\n<dd>In all the ordinances, would I<\/dd>\n<dd>On Jesus fix my faithful eye.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>The rest of the poem also makes the authors point about the central role of Christ in the gospel.
