I take it that Sullivan’s reference to the Grand Inquisitor is, besides being a reference to Dostoevski, a reference to the position that Pope Benedict held in the Vatican before he was elected pope. He was the head of the congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, which was formerly called “the Inquisition.” One of his official titles was “Grand Inquisitor of Rome.” <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
