To be honest, these are perhaps the only mass emails that I don\u2019t mind. And I frankly agree with their general point: what better way to wish your own mother a Happy Mother\u2019s Day than by contributing to another mother in her name?<!--more--> Also on the bright side, many organizations get matching funds during the Mother\u2019s Day fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, while I\u2019m certainly a believer that NGOs alone can\u2019t fix these problems, I\u2019m also a huge believer in the good that NGOs do. It\u2019s another way of our pooling our resources (financial, knowledge, political, etc.) together in order to make a much bigger impact than we ever could alone. So for this Mother\u2019s Day, I\u2019m going to highlight some organizations that I consider gift worthy on behalf of my own mother (and yours).<\/p>\n<p>(For the skeptics and for those interested in accountability, you can check out these organizations at places like charitywatch.org where those large\/old enough to be ranked all rank very high.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicrelief.org\/\">Catholic Relief Services<\/a> (here\u2019s my bit of holy envy \u2013 how I wish we had the equivalent)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pih.org\/\">Partners in Health<\/a> (I\u2019ve mentioned them in past posts, but they\u2019re worth mentioning again \u2013 an amazing organization)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.somaly.org\/\">Somaly Mam Foundation<\/a> (works with both the survivors and current victims of sexual trafficking and exploitation, started and ran by a survivor)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roomtoread.org\/page.aspx?pid=209\">Room to Read<\/a> (committed to increasing literacy and assisting girls to graduate from secondary school in Asia and Africa)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.familycareintl.org\/en\/home\">Family Care International<\/a> (dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safer)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenforwomen.org\/\">Women for Women International<\/a> (a long time family favorite)<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d love to hear from you about organizations \u2013 particularly those working to improve women\u2019s lives \u2013 that you find worthy.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Mother\u2019s Day to all of you, and especially to our Heavenly Mother.
