{"id":1888,"date":"2005-01-21T19:53:30","date_gmt":"2005-01-22T00:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1888"},"modified":"2009-01-16T17:26:54","modified_gmt":"2009-01-16T21:26:54","slug":"film-festival-musings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2005\/01\/film-festival-musings\/","title":{"rendered":"Film Festival Musings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of you who are more culturally aware probably know that there&#8217;s a film festival going on here in Utah.<\/p>\n<p>No, not that Sundance thing &#8212; I&#8217;m talking about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldsbox.com\/\">Fourth LDS Film Festival<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nMy boss was gracious enough to allow me to take an extra-long lunch hour to go hear LDS author and movie producer  Dave Wolverton (a.k.a. David Farland) speak about screenwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Much of what he said applies to screenwriting (or writing) in general, but he had some interesting things to say about LDS movies.  For example, he said that LDS films tend to back away from romance:  &#8220;How much can you do with lingering looks?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the most important point he made was that so far, the demographic targeting of LDS films seems to be off.  Where are the family movies, movies in which kids play an important part?<\/p>\n<p>I think he has a point.  Family films seem like they would be a natural fit with LDS filmmakers, but in looking at this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldsfilm.com\/lds_box.html\">list of box office recipts for LDS films<\/a>, it seems all of the ones not involving young prophets are about people of college age or older.<\/p>\n<p>Is it time for LDS filmmakers to shift their focus from missionaries and young single adults?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those of you who are more culturally aware probably know that there&#8217;s a film festival going on here in Utah.
