However, this lesson covers even more material than usual: 3 and one-half chapters of Acts, 5 chapters of 1 Thessalonians, and 3 chapters of 2 Thessalonians. To try to make the material more manageable, I will focus on 1 Thessalonians 4-5. As you will see, however, even that has produced a long set of study materials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/1.1?lang=eng#primary\">1Thessalonians<\/a> is the oldest New Testament document we have, written before any of the Gospels or other letters. Thessalonica was a Greek city, the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. You can see its location on your Bible maps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/acts\/17.1-14?lang=eng#primary\">Acts 17:1-14<\/a> tells of Paul\u2019s missionary work in Thessalonica. A review of those verses would be good background for reading this letter.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Paul\u2019s letter are letters of correction, responding to doctrinal and other problems in congregations that he has left behind. 1 Thessalonians, however, is a letter of exhortation. Paul wishes to strengthen the congregation by reminding them of his preaching. Because it is a letter of exhortation to an early branch of the Church, 1 Thessalonians is also a good example of how Paul taught the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>See the LDS Bible Dictionary for more information about and an outline of 1 Thessalonians. The outline shows that there are two major parts to Paul\u2019s letter, a section in which he reminds them of his work among them and of his integrity in doing that work (chapters 1-3) and a section in which he exhorts them to live expecting Christ\u2019s return at any moment (chapters 4-5).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4?lang=eng\"><em>1 Thessalonians 4<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.1-2?lang=eng#primary\">Verses 1-2 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly the early Christian leaders taught their converts how to live: \u201cas you have received of us how ye ought to walk and please God.\u201d How do the behaviors on which Paul concentrates in what follows, sexual purity, living quiety, and minding one\u2019s own business, serve God? Why do they please him?<\/p>\n<p>Paul speaks of the Thessalonians receiving instruction for how to live in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.1?lang=eng#primary\">verse 1<\/a>, and he reminds them in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.2?lang=eng#1\">verse 2<\/a> that they know the things they have been taught. Being a Christian meant more than confessing belief that Jesus was the Messiah. It meant adopting certain rules and conventions of behavior, and the essence of those seems to have been \u201cLive as<\/p>\n<p>Jesus lived.\u201d (See <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-jn\/2.6?lang=eng#5\">1 John 2:6<\/a>.) There is no way to separate true Christian belief from ethical behavior.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.1?lang=eng#primary\">Verse 1<\/a> makes it clear that Paul has written to the Thessalonians at least once before: he refers to what they have received from him. What does this tell us about the New Testament documents we have?<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.1?lang=eng#primary\">verse 1<\/a>, what is Paul asking the Thessalonians to do? Paul uses a Hebraism: the word \u201cwalk.\u201d In other words, he uses a Greek word in a way that reflects Hebrew usage. (This Hebraism is common in Paul. For examples of the Hebrew usage, see Genesis 17:1; Exodus 16:4; Leviticus 18:3 and 26:3; and Deuteronomy 8:6.) What do you think \u201cwalk\u201d means here? Why is walking a good metaphor for behavior?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo walk and to please God\u201d is also probably what is called a hendiadys, two words used to mean the same thing. The usual example is <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/ot\/gen\/1.2?lang=eng#1\">Genesis 1:2<\/a>: \u201cThe earth was without form and void.\u201d \u201cWithout form\u201d and \u201cvoid\u201d (i.e, empty) mean the same thing. What does it mean to say that the way we \u201cwalk\u201d and the way we please God are the same?<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to \u201cabound more and more\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>To what authority does Paul appeal in both <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.1-2?lang=eng#primary\">verses 1 and 2<\/a>? Why does he state that authority explicitly and repeat it? (Compare <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/2.13?lang=eng#12\">1 Thessalonians 2:13<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.3-8?lang=eng#2\">Verses 3-8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Italicized words in the King James translation (KJV) are words inserted by the editors, words they believed were required to make the English more readable. However, how does <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.3?lang=eng#2\">verse 3<\/a> read if you remove the word \u201ceven\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:<\/p>\n<p>Now try also placing a colon after the word \u201csanctification.\u201d (The Greek text had no punctuation, so the punctuation is all supplied by the editors.)<\/p>\n<p>For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that ye should abstain from fornication:<\/p>\n<p>Does that change your understanding of the passage?\u00a0 Are there other possible ways to read the verse that make sense?<\/p>\n<p>When the KJV was translated, the word \u201cfornication\u201d had a broader meaning than it has today; it referred to sexual impurity in general. It translates a Greek word that also often has that broader meaning of the King James English.<\/p>\n<p>The word translated \u201csanctification\u201d in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.3-4?lang=eng#2\">verses 3 and 4<\/a> could also be translated \u201cconsecration.\u201d Would doing so make a difference to the meaning?<\/p>\n<p>Why does Paul associate sanctification, consecration, or holiness here with sexual purity rather than with religious rituals?<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.4?lang=eng#3\">verse 4<\/a>, to what do you think the word \u201cvessel\u201d refers? The Greek word means \u201cpot.\u201d See <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/8.16?lang=eng#15\">Luke 8:16<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/2-cor\/4.7?lang=eng#6\">2 Corinthians 4:7<\/a> to see the word used in that way. (The Greek word is one of the root words for our word \u201ccasserole\u201d!) Obviously this is a metaphor, but the metaphor is ambiguous in Greek. It can be read in either of two ways: either it means \u201cone\u2019s own body\u201d or it means \u201ca wife.\u201d Which do you think most likely? Why? Are there any scriptures that might provide evidence for one of these rather than the other?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the best translation of the word translated \u201cvessel,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.3-4?lang=eng#2\">verses 3 and 4<\/a> are clearly about sexual behavior. What does it mean for sexual behavior to happen \u201cin sanctification\u201d? \u201cIn honor\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Another translation has \u201clustful passion\u201d instead of \u201clust of concupiscence\u201d in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.5?lang=eng#4\">verse 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paul says that the will of God is that the Saints refrain from sexual impurity and that they not defraud their brothers (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a>). Some understand verse 6 to refer to adultery rather than to business fraud. What do you think of that proposal? If you understand <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a> to be about fraud in its usual sense, why do you think he singles out avoiding lust (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.5?lang=eng#4\">verse 5<\/a>) and honesty (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a>) to summarize God\u2019s expectations of those who accept him?<\/p>\n<p>If he doesn\u2019t mean business fraud, why does he describe sexual impurity as fraud?<\/p>\n<p>What warning does Paul give in the last half of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>What motivation for obedience does Paul give in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.7?lang=eng#6\">verse 7<\/a>? How does that motivate obedience? What does it mean to be <em>called<\/em> to holiness?<\/p>\n<p>What is the difference between preaching that we ought to live sexually pure lives because doing so is psychologically or socially healthy and preaching (as Paul does) that we ought to do so because that is what pleases God, because that is what God has called us to do?<\/p>\n<p>Does Paul preach as he does because at his time the psychological and social aspects of sexual purity were not understood? Is one of these approaches more likely to be more effective, pragmatic, than the other? Do we have to choose between one teaching and the other, or are both important? If your answer is both, do you feel that way because you feel like you are supposed to or because you have good reasons for both? Is there any priority between of one over the other?<\/p>\n<p>How do we effectively and meaningfully teach people that we have been <em>called<\/em> to be sexually pure?<\/p>\n<p>What does having been called to sexual purity tell us about our relation to our bodies? Do they belong to us?\u00a0 (See <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-cor\/6.19?lang=eng#18\">1 Corinthians 6:19<\/a> for a related scripture.) What would it mean to understand my body as not belonging to me?<\/p>\n<p>Paul is preaching sexual purity to people who live in a society that had little regard for it (though Gentile philosophers also taught against sexual license). For a man, sexual relations outside of marriage were seldom frowned on. Sometimes they were encouraged. It was not unusual, for example, for wealthy men to marry in order to establish business and political ties and to provide an appropriate mother for their children and, at the same time, to have a mistress for intellectual companionship, friendship, and most of the other things we associate with a good marriage today. That kind of behavior was not usually considered scandalous.<\/p>\n<p>Greek and Roman philosophers taught moderation, but moderation did not necessarily preclude marital infidelity. So preaching the gospel in this society required that one emphasize the completely different standard required of Christians (the same standard, by the way, for which nonChristian Jews were already known).<\/p>\n<p>Notice, however, that even Jesus\u2019 disciples found his teaching about marital fidelity hard, at least initially. In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/19.9?lang=eng#8\">Matthew 19:9<\/a> he teaches his disciples that only adultery justifies divorce, and his disciples respond, \u201cIf that is how it is with a man and his wife [i.e., if those are the only grounds for divorce], then it is better not to marry\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/19.10?lang=eng#9\">Matthew 19:10<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.8?lang=eng#7\">verse 8<\/a>, what is the object of the first use of \u201cdespiseth\u201d? Is it another person or is it Paul\u2019s message in the preceding verses? How is it relevant that God has given us his Holy Spirit? Does it have something to do with being called to holiness?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.9-12?lang=eng#8\">Verses 9-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Paul says \u201cye need not that I write unto you,\u201d he is doing what we do when we say \u201cI don\u2019t need to tell you\u201d and then follow that by telling our audience whatever it is we wanted to say. This is a way of introducing something that he wants to talk about and underlining that it is something that ought to be common knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>How does Paul know that God has taught the Thessalonians to love one another (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.9-10?lang=eng#8\">verses 9-10<\/a>)? Is <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/1.4?lang=eng#3\">1 Thessalonians 1:4<\/a> relevant? <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-jn\/4.10?lang=eng#9\">1 John 4:10<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>In what ways is it possible for the Thessalonians actually to have loved \u201call the brethren which are in all Macedonia,\u201d in other words all of the saints of the region? In other words, how does a person actually love \u201ceveryone\u201d? What does the word \u201clove\u201d mean when we are admonished to love everyone? What is Paul asking the Thessalonians to increase at the end of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.10?lang=eng#9\">verse 10<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>What does \u201cstudy to be quiet\u201d mean? What do you think he means by \u201cdo your own business\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>When he tells them that they should \u201cwork with [their] own hands,\u201d why does he put it that way? Why not just advise them to work? Why is manual labor important to those to whom he preaches? There were certainly people who did not work with their hands in Roman society, so why focus on that particular kind of work? Might there have been those in the congregation thought themselves above doing manual labor? What does this admonition mean to someone whose work is not done with the hands?<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.12?lang=eng#11\">verse 12<\/a>, who are those who are \u201cwithout,\u201d in other words outside? Outside of what?<\/p>\n<p>How does loving those in the Church and living honestly toward those outside make it so that we lack for nothing (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.12?lang=eng#11\">verse 12<\/a>)? In practical terms, what does \u201clack for nothing\u201d mean? What is the difference between \u201clack\u201d and \u201cwant\u201d? Is it related to the difference between \u201cwant\u201d and \u201cneed\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Why do you think Paul sent this particular message to those in Thessalonica? What might have prompted this part of his message? If Paul has, as he says, already taught them these things, why does he need to repeat them here (and again in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5?lang=eng\">chapter 5<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.13-18?lang=eng#12\">Verses 13-18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why might this message about the resurrection of the dead have been important to the Thessalonians? What kind of sorrow is Paul trying to deal with (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.13?lang=eng#12\">verse 13<\/a>)? What kind of people would have had no hope for the dead? How is that relevant to our own situation today? What connection does Paul assume between Jesus\u2019 resurrection and the resurrection of the dead?<\/p>\n<p>Recall that this letter is the earliest New Testament writing we have. Some have suggested that early members of the Church believe that Jesus\u2019 Second Coming was immanent and that no one would die before he came again. Do you think that is a reasonable explanation of what Paul may be responding to, that some in the community have died and the members didn\u2019t think that was going to happen? How might people who had that expectation have responded to the death of someone in the Church?<\/p>\n<p>The King James translation of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.15?lang=eng#14\">verse 15<\/a> is slightly odd. It translates the Greek word <em>phthan?<\/em> as \u201cprevent,\u201d though it means \u201cprecede.\u201d \u201cBe ahead of\u201d might be a good translation: \u201cwe who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not be ahead of those who are asleep.\u201d Given that alternate translation, what is Paul\u2019s point in this verse?<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.16-17?lang=eng#15\">verses 16-17<\/a> is Paul\u2019s point that we know the specifics of what the events of the Second Coming will be like, or is he speaking of those particulars to make some other, more important point.<\/p>\n<p>What words does Paul have in mind in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.18?lang=eng#17\">verse 18<\/a>? In other words, what is the comfort that he has spoken? Is it, for example, the last clause of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/4.17?lang=eng#16\">17<\/a>, \u201cso shall we ever be with the Lord\u201d? Or is it more than that? If so, what more is it that he has offered as comfort?<\/p>\n<p>How does the comfort that Paul describes here compare to the comfort that Alma says we agree to offer when we are baptized (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/18.9?lang=eng#8\">Mosiah 18:9<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5?lang=eng\"><em>1 Thessalonians 5<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.1-5?lang=eng#primary\">Verses 1-5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why does Paul feel it necessary to remind them that they do not know when the Second Coming will occur? \u201cThe Day of the Lord\u201d is a phrase from the Old Testament. See <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/ot\/amos\/5.18?lang=eng#17\">Amos 5:18<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/ot\/joel\/2.31?lang=eng#30\">Joel 2:31<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/ot\/mal\/4.5?lang=eng#4\">Malachi 4:5<\/a>, for example. What does it mean in the Old Testament? Is that the same thing that it means here?<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201clike a thief in the night\u201d is a frightening one. Who isn\u2019t afraid of a thief breaking into the house at night? <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.3?lang=eng#2\">Verse 3<\/a> uses another image, a painful rather than a frightening one, but both are images of surprise and suggest foreboding. Why does Paul use these kinds of images to describe the Second Coming?<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to be the children of light (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.5?lang=eng#4\">verse 5<\/a>) if the Lord will return as a thief in the night?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.6-11?lang=eng#5\">Verses 6-11<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having said that the Lord will come like a thief, in verse 6 Paul draws his conclusion about how we should live if we don\u2019t know when the Lord is coming: \u201cwatch and be sober.\u201d How does what he says in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a> follow from what he said in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.2-4?lang=eng#primary\">verses 2-4<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSober\u201d is a literal translation of the Greek word in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.6?lang=eng#5\">verse 6<\/a>. What does sobriety connote? How do <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.8-9?lang=eng#7\">verses 8-9<\/a> answer that question? (Compare what Peter has to say about sobriety: <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-pet\/1.13?lang=eng#12\">1 Peter 1:13<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-pet\/4.7-8?lang=eng#6\">4:7-8<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-pet\/5.8-9?lang=eng#7\">5:8-9<\/a>.) How is Peter\u2019s advice in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-pet\/4.7-8?lang=eng#6\">1 Peter 4:7-8<\/a> related to Paul\u2019s advice here?<\/p>\n<p>The Greek of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.8?lang=eng#7\">verse 8<\/a> suggests that believers already wear the armor of faith, love, and hope. One way to indicate that would be to translate \u201cputting on\u201d as \u201chaving put on.\u201d Does that make any difference to the meaning of the verse for us?<\/p>\n<p>What does <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.10?lang=eng#9\">verse 10<\/a> tell us about the purpose of the atonement? When we speak of the atonement, we often focus on Christ\u2019s suffering in the Garden rather than on his death. Why might Paul and other early Christians have focused, instead, on his death?<\/p>\n<p>How does <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.11?lang=eng#10\">verse 11<\/a> tie together the earlier discussion of love, the discussion of the resurrection, and this discussion of the Second Coming?<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to comfort another (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.11?lang=eng#10\">verse 11<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.11?lang=eng#10\">Verse 11<\/a> says that we ought to edify one another (and it recognizes that the Thessalonians are doing so). How do we edify one another? (Compare <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-cor\/3.9-17?lang=eng#8\">1 Corinthians 3:9-17<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/eph\/2.20-22?lang=eng#19\">Ephesians 2:20-22<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.12-13?lang=eng#11\">Verses 12-13<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What problem do these verses suggest the Thessalonians have been having? Another translation of the word translated \u201cknow\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.12?lang=eng#11\">verse 12<\/a>) is \u201crecognize.\u201d What does it mean to recognize those who labor over us?<\/p>\n<p>Why does Paul describe church leaders as those who \u201clabour among you, and are over you\u201d rather than just those who \u201care over you\u201d? What does it mean to be over someone \u201cin the Lord\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Why should we love those who lead us (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.13?lang=eng#12\">verse 13<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to be at peace among ourselves? Does it just mean that members of the ward or branch don\u2019t squabble?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.14-22?lang=eng#13\">Verses 14-22<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Are <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.14-15?lang=eng#13\">verses 14-15<\/a> addressed to the leaders who were spoken of in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.12-13?lang=eng#11\">verses 12-13<\/a> or to the members of the Thessalonica branch in general?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.16-22?lang=eng#15\">Verses 16-22<\/a> (or, <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.16-24?lang=eng#15\">perhaps 16-24<\/a>) are almost a psalm. Read them aloud and listen for their effect. The psalmic effect is heightened in Greek, where every admonition but one has a word that begins with \u201cp,\u201d usually the first one.<\/p>\n<p>How does the substance of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.16-18?lang=eng#15\">verses 16-18<\/a> differ from that of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.12-15?lang=eng#11\">verses 12-15<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.18?lang=eng#17\">Verse 18<\/a> says \u201cthis is the will of God . . . concerning you.\u201d To what does the word \u201cthis\u201d refer?<\/p>\n<p>What do <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.19-20?lang=eng#18\">verses 19-20<\/a> recommend?<\/p>\n<p>How is <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.21?lang=eng#20\">verse 21<\/a> related to verses <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.19-20?lang=eng#18\">19-20<\/a>? Would it make sense to begin <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.21?lang=eng#20\">verse 21<\/a> with \u201cnevertheless\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>A better translation of the word \u201cappearance\u201d in <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.22?lang=eng#21\">verse 22<\/a> is probably \u201cform,\u201d making <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.22?lang=eng#21\">verse 22<\/a> a kind of synopsis of the previous verses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.23-24?lang=eng#22\">Verses 23-24<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul often refers to God as \u201cthe God of peace.\u201d Why?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.22?lang=eng#21\">Verses 22<\/a> and the first half of <a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.23?lang=eng#22\">23<\/a> (to the semi-colon) might be one sentence rather than two. If they are one sentence, what does it mean?<\/p>\n<p>Why is it important to remind the saints in Thessalonica that God is faithful, in other words that he can be trusted (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.24?lang=eng#23\">verse 24<\/a>)? Does that answer the concern they appear to have? How is that reminder important to us?<\/p>\n<p>Paul speaks of the members here as called. He uses similar language in Romans 1:6 and elsewhere. What does it mean to be called to be a member? Does the name of the contemporary church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, tell us anything about what we are called to?<\/p>\n<p>What does Paul promise that God will do (<a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.24?lang=eng#23\">verse 24<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.25-28?lang=eng#24\">Verses 25-28<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/1-thes\/5.27?lang=eng#26\">Verse 27<\/a> begins with what is, in Greek, a very strong admonition: \u201cI put you under oath by the Lord to read this letter to all of the brothers and sisters\u201d would be one way to translate that verse. Why do you think Paul makes such a strong charge to the person to whom this letter is written? We tend to read much of this letter as ordinary ethical advice, the kind that most ethical teachers, whether Christian or not, would give. Does Paul\u2019s admonition suggest that we ought to read that advice differently? However, this lesson covers even more material than usual: 3 and one-half chapters of Acts, 5 chapters of 1 Thessalonians, and 3 chapters of 2 Thessalonians. As you will see, however, even that has produced a long set of study materials. 1Thessalonians is the oldest New Testament document we have, written before any of the Gospels or other letters. Thessalonica was a Greek city, the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. You can see its location on your Bible maps. Acts 17:1-14 tells of Paul\u2019s missionary work in Thessalonica. A review of those verses would be good background for reading this letter. Some of Paul\u2019s letter are letters of correction, responding to doctrinal and other problems in congregations that he has left behind. 1 Thessalonians, however, is a letter of exhortation. Paul wishes to strengthen the congregation by reminding them of his preaching. Because it is a letter of exhortation to an early branch of the Church, 1 Thessalonians is also a good example of how Paul taught the Gospel.
