{"id":1628,"date":"2004-11-21T21:30:56","date_gmt":"2004-11-22T02:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1628"},"modified":"2004-11-21T21:56:01","modified_gmt":"2004-11-22T02:56:01","slug":"12-questions-for-kathleen-flake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2004\/11\/12-questions-for-kathleen-flake\/","title":{"rendered":"12 Questions for Kathleen Flake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are pleased to announce that Kathleen Flake is the next participant in our 12 Questions <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp\/index.php?cat=12\">series<\/a>.  <!--more--><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/wp\/wp-content\/flake_politics.jpg\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Flake_book\" \/>  Professor Flake&#8217;s highly regarded book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0807855014\/qid=1101085777\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14\/104-5206473-2044745?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\">The Politics of American Religious Identity<\/a><\/em> (2004), explores the national crisis that developed upon Apostle Reed Smoot&#8217;s election to the United States Senate in 1903.  She writes that the book is framed by two primary questions: first, &#8220;How do religious communities change over time and retain a sense of sameness with their originating vision?&#8221;; and second, &#8220;What are the political terms by which diverse religions are brought within America&#8217;s constitutional order?&#8221;  Several of us have read or are reading this book now, and heartily recommend it.  How often do you get a chance to read a book and concurrently ask the author any questions you may have?<\/p>\n<p>Professor Flake was a lawyer for 15 years before beginning her graduate work in religion and history.  She has an M.A. from Catholic University in Liturgical Studies, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in History of Christianity.  She currently teaches at Vanderbilt University&#8217;s Divinity School.  Last month she presented a paper at Claremont Graduate Univerity&#8217;s conference on Mormonism, entitled &#8220;Positioning Mormonism in Religious Studies and American History.&#8221;  She also presented on &#8220;Joseph Smith&#8217;s Narrative Theology&#8221; at last year&#8217;s Yale conference on Mormon perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on her book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rickross.com\/reference\/mormon\/mormon149.html\">here<\/a> is an article from the Salt Lake Tribune, and <a href=\"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/archives\/000489.html\">here<\/a> is a brief post by Nate, with some interesting comments.
