{"id":13523,"date":"2010-10-02T13:07:39","date_gmt":"2010-10-02T18:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/?p=13523"},"modified":"2010-10-02T13:07:39","modified_gmt":"2010-10-02T18:07:39","slug":"let-zion-in-her-beauty-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesandseasons.org\/index.php\/2010\/10\/let-zion-in-her-beauty-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Let Zion in Her Beauty Rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got that familiar little thrill we all feel when one of our favorite hymns is sung in General Conference, as our first session this morning opened with &#8220;Let Zion in Her Beauty Rise.&#8221; (I was especially happy to have caught it since we experienced significant technical difficulties getting the conference to stream, causing us to miss both the intro and Pres. Monson&#8217;s subsequent talk &#8211; in eight years of internet streaming conference, I&#8217;ve never not had technical troubles, except one time, in the middle of the night, in a smoke filled internet cafe in Alexandria, Egypt). This is one of the great hymns of the restoration, written by Edward Partridge and included in Emma&#8217;s hymnal.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, as with many of our hymns, we only get a few (slightly sanitized) verses of this hymn today. I thought I&#8217;d put it up with all of it&#8217;s millenarial gusto for all to enjoy. Here&#8217;s how it read in our first hymnal:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"border-collapse: collapse; font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;\">1. Let Zion in her beauty rise;<br \/>\nHer light begins to shine,<br \/>\nEre long her King will rend the skies,<br \/>\nMajestic and divine.<br \/>\nThe gospel&#8217;s spreading through the land,<br \/>\nA people to prepare,<br \/>\nTo meet the Lord and Enoch&#8217;s band,<br \/>\nTriumphant in the air.<\/p>\n<p>2. Ye heralds sound the gospel trump,<br \/>\nTo earth&#8217;s remotest bound;<br \/>\nGo spread the news from pole to pole,<br \/>\nIn all the nations round,<br \/>\nThat Jesus in the clouds above,<br \/>\nWith hosts of angels too,<br \/>\nWill soon appear his saints to save,<br \/>\nHis enemies subdue.<\/p>\n<p>3. But ere that great and solemn day,<br \/>\nThe stars from heav&#8217;n will fall,<br \/>\nThe moon be turned into blood,<br \/>\nThe waters into gall,<br \/>\nThe sun with blackness will be clothed,<br \/>\nAll nature look affright!<br \/>\nWhile men, rebellious wicked men,<br \/>\nGaze heedless on the sight.<\/p>\n<p>4. The earth shall reel, the heavens shake,<br \/>\nThe sea move to the north,<br \/>\nThe earth roll up like as a scroll,<br \/>\nWhen God&#8217;s command goes forth;<br \/>\nThe mountains sink, the valleys rise,<br \/>\nAnd all become a plain,<br \/>\nThe islands and the continents<br \/>\nWill then unite again.<\/p>\n<p>5. Alas! the day will then arrive,<br \/>\nWhen rebels to God&#8217;s grace,<br \/>\nWill call for rocks to fall on them,<br \/>\nAnd hide them from his face:<br \/>\nNot so with those who keep his law,<br \/>\nThey joy to meet their Lord<br \/>\nIn clouds above, with them that slept<br \/>\nIn Christ, their sure reward.<\/p>\n<p>6. That glorious rest will then commence,<br \/>\nWhich prophets did foretell,<br \/>\nWhen Christ will reign with saints on earth,<br \/>\nAnd in their presence dwell<br \/>\nA thousand years: O glorious day!<br \/>\nDear Lord prepare my heart,<br \/>\nTo stand with thee, on Zion&#8217;s mount,<br \/>\nAnd never more to part.<\/p>\n<p>7.
