Given how taken with translation/interpretation Joseph was (e.g. Joseph’s bible translation project, but really throughout his life right up to the end with the King Follett discourse) I suspect you’re right and that much of Joseph’s work of translation included a reinterpretation and clarification for our dispensation. It’s interesting, however to see the places where the BofM and Joseph’s near contemporaneous revelations (e.g. D&C 19 on hell — which I ought to have listed above) pointedly diverge.

It’s worth speculating that when the text was revealed to Joseph that Nephi’s prophecies might have been clarified or expanded by God to be more clear regarding the historical events. I wouldn’t be at all shocked to learn that the original Book of Mormon text was much more vague ala John’s Revelation or Isaiah.
