It’s true that Nephi is concerned with his descendents and their place in a way that seems pretty alien to contemporary minds. But that’s a fairly common cultural view in the ancient world – especially for those not in poverty. (Lehi ends up in poverty through most of the narrative but it’s clear he’s fairly well off in Jerusalem)

The big question of course is why the Lord cares about these matters. Clearly we don’t, but they form a significant part of the Book of Mormon narrative. I think it’s hard for contemporary readers to even understand why Nephi cares, let alone why God does.
