The idea is more or less mnemonic techniques for remembering based upon physical location of spaces. So think imagining a building and then moving through the building into different rooms with different objects/acts in each room. This was likely a big influence on masonry although I think as a more abstract general cognitive strategy it also plays into things. This idea of space/memory also can be seen in ritual and even visions. In the medieval era the art of memory often involved explicit treatment of these vision building/spaces as temples.

What’s interesting in the transition from the Kirtland endowment to the Nauvoo endowment is that it’s not just about becoming priests and a priesthood but also kingship. But the idea that both of these involve ritual is rather prominent in the Book of Mormon. Benjamin as Gerald in the OP notes for Kingship (largely following the ANE and Hebrew form) in the Book of Mormon. The priestly initiations aren’t described much but clearly they are there (see Alma 11-14)

Here’s a quote: “For before his own distinct and personal Appearance, his Birth of Power will be first brought forth in some chosen Vessel, or Vessels; as Moses, Joshua, and Aaron, were Types, anointed to be Heads and Leaders unto the rest, to bring them into the Promised Land…. Where the New and Living Priesthood shall according to the Covenant, and Law of the Spirit of Life, be officiously and effectually performed … within the Walls of the New Jerusalem when it comes down upon the Earth, and by them be offered up as a most perfect Sacrifice in the New Temple. For it was given me to understand and know in very Truth, that such an holy Order of Priests should be Anointed.” Jane Lead, A Message to the Phildelphian Society, Whithersoever dispersed over the Whole Earth. Together with a Call to the Several Gathered Churches among Protestants in this Nation of England (London 1696).
So these ideas were around.
