Things definitely haven’t gone well for them. Yet they’ve also been rebuked by an angel and had what appears fairly miraculous in terms of getting the plates. While we can read this other way it seems to me as the narrative progresses (certainly by the time of the liahona) the excuses Laman and Lemuel can make about their faithfulness keep shrinking.

The sexism angle seems a bit more complex. Both because of the times (which were pretty sexist) but also because I just can’t quite seem to figure out what to make of the lack of description of women. It’s not like there wasn’t a stronger female element in the scriptures of the era.

I guess this is really how one sets up his belief in the BoM- whether he believes Nephi or just fictionalizes and marginilizes the nain characters.
