I plan to share with my class the discussion of this story in Richards and O’Brien, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes. They describe an experiment in which Americans and Russians were asked to read the passage and then recount it. Most of the Americans left the famine element out of their retellings, while most of the Russians included it, resulting in a flavor much more like “The Loving Father.”
