  1. The actor pulls this off perfectly. Student version of the Old Spice guy.

For those who didn’t watch a lot of ESPN this spring or haven’t watched every video on Old Spice’s YouTube channel, the BYU video is a send up of this Old Spice ad.

  2. I just need for everyone to know that our couches are exactly that same design, but a slightly darker color. Plus yogurt stains.

  3. Stephen Jones (the actor) does stand-up at BYU with the stand-up comedy club, Humor U. He did a bit in a stand-up show where he imitated the Old Spice guy as an old man; it probably sparked the idea for the commercial. This video is totally viral now. You should see Stephen’s Facebook page, if you have access to it.

  4. I really didn’t think they had it in them. Surprises are good sometimes.

  5. Kevin, if you can’t see the embedded video it’s probably due to your browser’s Flash settings. You can try seeing it on YouTube at

    .

  6. In watching the video again I noticed that the plant that’s pulled out of the first scene is on the ground, on top of a body, in the next scene. I’d thought the change was done with a green screen, but it looks like the first scene change was done old school!

  7. Totally rad. Should I be troubled by the fact that they feel the need to advertise the library? Will they make one for the RB, too?

  8. Funny advertisement, but I really doubt BYU had anything to do with it. Would BYU create an ad with the F-bomb in it? Hardly. Still funny, though.

  9. Okay, my bad. My wife pointed out that what he actually said was “BUCKETLOADS of library databases…” I should probably get my hearing checked…

  10. 18 LOL I listened to it again for the subliminal f bomb. Yeah, you need your hearing checked ;)

  11. My daughter, who has lived in several states, believes that there is more and better humor in advertising in Utah because there is less reliance on sex.

This is another indicator that BYU is a center of excellence for all sorts of media arts, from the traditional musical performances, to plays and dance, to animation, and movie/TV production. I say this as a University of Utah alumnus. Sadly, I don’t perceive the “U” as having as much of a sense of humor as BYU.

  12. BYU is the bee’s knees because of one funny video? But wait, let’s take this opportunity to knock another school because they didn’t. Makes sense to me.

  13. Stephen Jones (the actor) is a BYU student, and last I heard the elders’ quorum president in his singles ward. He is a really nice guy, fairly conservative LDS guy from Florida originally, served a mission in Brazil, owns an iPhone, and is a really talented performer. He has “bucketloads” of charisma when he performs on stage. He dances like a champ. You can see more of him at humoru.org, I believe.

  14. This video was written, directed, and produced by a team of students who work in the library. It was shot in the library on a Saturday. The students usually work recording lectures and supporting other campus projects. The guy under the tree at second 17 is one of the crew who really went the extra mile to move props. Also, the Food Zone is in the center of level 3 of the library. It is a trial run to see if we can get people to eat away from books and computers. The library welcome snacks that aren’t messy or smelly so no popcorn for example. Thanks for watching.

  15. Being something of a fan of the Old Spice commercials, I fell off my chair the first time I saw this. Not just because it’s genius, but because Jones does an amazing impersonation.

And because of the guy who was killed by the plant.

  16. Ha ha ha. I didn’t even notice the plant. I actually think Jones does a better job than the original Old Spice guy.

  17. Best library commercial I’ve ever seen. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the only library commercial I’ve ever seen.

  18. “He’s a conservative?”

It’s OK, Dan, it probably just means that he balances his checkbook, prefers bonds to stocks, and never wears white shoes until after Memorial Day.

  19. are you saying liberals don’t balance their checkbooks, don’t prefer bonds to stocks and don’t wear white shoes until after Memorial Day?

  20. No, I’m saying that giving liberally doesn’t mean donating to NARAL and a conservative investment strategy doesn’t mean buying stocks in Halliburton.

  21. I think our BYU comedy man is about to get a lot more famous – his video is now up on the main msn.com webpage side by side with old spice guy. If he plays his cards right, this could be a career launcher for him. I hope so, good on him.
