Joy On A Cattle Truck

This is a group of mostly single Latter-day Saints from D.C. and elsewhere who are on their way to volunteer in a remote Guatemalan village in the Polochic Valley– one of the poorest in the world.  Many of the villagers from this area are themselves Latter-day Saints. The volunteer work done be this group consisted of a variety of  humanitarian building projects, educational workshops and medical service. This photograph shows just one of several cattle trucks that transported the group to the village. This volunteer trip was recently featured in Meridian Magazine.

I served a mission in Guatemala but never was in Polochic. I still remember meeting one of the first missionaries to come from that area.

    It’s a pleasure to see this …

Thank- You so much for including us in this series. Just to clarify, we had people attend from all over the USA- there was even someone from Austria and from the Virgin Islands. What I was told is about 50% of the villagers were LDS. But no matter what one’s faith, we were all happy to be there. That picture was taken on the first day as we departed to the various villages.

One other image I really loved was seeing the devotion of the LDS missionaries serving there! On the day we arrived in the villages, I recall feeling sad as I saw the level of poverty. And then I saw a smiling elder sitting on the side of the pick-up truck as the truck drove down the other side of the mountain. It made me happy to know that they were remembered in that the gospel and its teachings/blessings were in that part of the world.
