This is very useful information for adjusting our mindset when reading the OT. Ann Madsen used to hang a saying on the podium during the Isaiah class I took from her at BYU. In bold letters it read: THINK ANCIENT. That helped a lot.

I just finished reading the Old Testament from cover-to-cover for the first time. I had tried several times before, but always got bogged down in Job. The writing style perplexed me; I don't think I gained much, only to confirm how difficult it is to understand, and how different.

Because the New Testament comes out of the Greek tradition, as you mention, it is much easier to read and comprehend. There are few doctrinal gems I could find in the Minor Prophet's writing.

You article is timely for me. I scratched my head as to what is the "take away" I should glean from this book of scripture. I doubt that I will reread it any time soon. I appreciate you insight--I'm glad I am not alone in my feelings.
