Considering that war and carnage have been an ever present facet of world history and that so many more live in relative peace and harmony today as compared to any other time in human history, it's not to be optimistic.

Yes we have a ways to go. While there will be countless mistakes, setbacks and lost opportunities along the way, I am hopeful the wave of peace and prosperity slowly encircling the earth will continue unabated.

Thich Nhat Hanh sees hope as an obstacle which focuses people on the future instead of the present moment. He writes, "If you can refrain from hoping, you can bring yourself entirely into the present momement and discover the joy that is already here."

As a recent new father (2 months ago), I definitely have trivial hope (to get more sleep one day) as well as hope in Christ and my daughter's future.

I struggle with pessimism and even some Moroni-esque anger as I see individuals and society as a whole ignore and reject lessons of the past (or even the present). I think Moroni and Mormon have a key point to make about hope - no matter how horrible things are, Christ is the Lord and is actively managing his kingdom on both sides of the veil. Secure hope is in Christ, and not in the arm of the flesh.

Interesting post Dave. A more recent data point might be Kosovo/Serbia. Western culture might be creating something more like a Utopia of tolerance/respect, but the natural man (the "Mormon" version of original sin vis-a-vis the Orthodox Christian view you mention above) seems ready to shirk it all off and become savage in short order.

dude, I don't think this post was about results, but about hope. I hope for world peace, but that means diddly squat in reality, but that hope feels good. :)

In any case, don't let this become a partisan squabble. My point was with jest.

Faith and charity get plenty of attention, but hope not so much.

Barack Obama preaches hope. :)

You really need to be a liberal, Dave. Who talks of hope but progressives? :)
