Brother Jonathan Goff at the Selenian Boondocks blog has a great post on what we can learn about space expansion from the Mormon experience settling the West.
The VoorTrek, other settlements in the American west, the early settlement of the less developed parts of the Americas, and the initial settlement of the Pacific islands would also be useful. As with the Mormon settlement, they are probably as useful for their dissimilarities to space expansion as for their similarities. I’d reckon that the Pacific islands settlement would be the most similar but we don’t have a lot of information on that.
