Thanks, all. This has been a long-term, favorite project.

So many valuable papers are lost when someone dies -- or a congregation moves to a new building -- and there is so much to do so fast that it's easier to throw out the papers than take time to examine them carefully. All of us should be on the lookout as parents and grandparents pass away. If you don't have room to store it all until you can sort through it carefully, better to toss the used "stuff" than the old paper.

Part 2 comin' right up.

Loved it, Ardis. Saving such a packet is like saving a lost hiker in the mountains. And I'm thinking about similar packets, covered under dust somewhere in an attic or basement of older Mormon church buildings across Europe, and imagining the day when the Church will built a new chapel, and dedicated young men & women will be asked to throughly clean out the old building before it will be sold, with a container in the street to throw everything in, and then, hopefully, hopefully, someone will ...

I don't mind a two-part post -- just so the second part arrives by lunchtime today!

Ardis,

You clearly have no concept of the traditional length limits on T&S posts. :P

Actually, I like the two-parters. A well-crafted two-part post can be a lot of fun -- and yours always deliver. :)

I don't mind only getting this much, because what you have written is so cool. I thought I had to deal with ugly problems in paleography, but the quarter-turn triple-palimpsests are giving me headaches just thinking about them.
