Primary Lesson #5 Supplement

HOW CAN I GROW? Sydney S. Reynolds, “Sharing Time: Jesus Christ Shows Us the Way,” Friend, Mar. 1999, 14, contains a paper craft that you could use as part of the lesson or have the children make during the lesson.

SCRIPTURE ACTIVITY: You can use the following activity to teach D & C 93:11-14. Write each phrase of this passage on a separate piece of paper and line the papers up along one wall. Have your class line up at the back and take a step forward as you read and explain each phrase of the passage. You may want to repeat this several times so that your class can begin to memorize the passage.

GAME: “Becoming More Like Jesus,” Friend, Apr. 1984, 33, contains a game that reinforces the theme of this lesson.

CHAIN LINK ACTIVITY: For this activity, each child will need 24 strips of paper, a pen or pencil, and tape. Write the following scripture references on the board. Read them aloud and then discuss which attribute of Jesus’ is shown in each verse. Have the children write the attribute on one strip of paper. Then, have them form the strips into chain links and link the chain together.

John 15:12 (love); Matt. 18:4 (humility); Matt. 5:9 (peacemakers); Rom. 14:13 (judge not); Matt. 5:5 (meek); Heb. 6:15 (patient); Matt. 5:8 (pure in heart); Matt. 5:16 (good works); Eph. 6:1 (obedient); Prov. 3:5–6 (trust in the Lord); Luke 23:34 (forgiving); Matt. 7:12 (kind); Matt. 25:40 (serve others); Luke 6:36 (merciful); Philip. 4:8 (honesty); Mark 11:22–23 (faith); Ps. 31:24 (courage); 1 Cor. 13:7 (endurance); 1 Cor. 16:14 (charity); Luke 11:1–4 (prayerful); John 13:15 (example); Matt. 5:34, 37 (clean language); Matt. 5:6 (righteous); Luke 24:45–48 (witness).

Suggest that the children take off one link each day read the characteristic; they could carry the link in their pocket or post it on a door or mirror to remind them to try to be more like Jesus Christ in that way all day long.

ESCAPE TO EGYPT GAME: Using the map at the end of the lesson, mark off spaces on the map and use this as a gameboard. Near the end of class, give each child three notecards and let them write three questions that would make good review questions for the lesson. Using simple place markers and the questions that your students have written, see who can be the first to escape to Egypt.

WORK AND GROWTH: Bring enough pieces of wood and sandpaper so that each child can have one of each. Allow them to sand their wood for a few minutes and then, while still sanding, discuss ways in which Jesus’ work with Joseph might have prepared him for his future ministry. Discuss how their current work (i.e., going to school and helping their families) is preparing them for their futures.
