Russell, may I add to your list: Allen and Janet Ahlberg's The Jolly Christmas Postman. It is a follow up book to their The Jolly Postman and very worthy of a child's read. It has been a family favorite for years.

I like the board book "A Halloween Countdown" -- it's a poem by Jack Pretlusky (whom we forgot when we were talking about poetry) and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. Alison loved it and I have to admit; I didn't mind reading it over and over.

Thanks for this list Russell. These discussions have been great fun for me.

I don't have any non-Christmas books to add to your list, but since trackbacks appear to be turned off here, I'll point to a discussion of Christmas books that I've posted at M*.

One interesting Christmas book is Christmas in the Big House, Christmas in the Quarters, by McKissack. This is an elightening look at pre-civil war festivities-very informational ages about 6years and up.

Thank you for sharing your list. I personally love reading children's books myself--if they are well written.

Perhaps next we can go over good movies that are free from ALL the garbage that their creators like to sneak in in the most subtle ways (contraversial--I know!). One that drives me nuts personally is that movie creators seem to think that taking the Lord's name in vain is a non-issue, just so long as they don't use a swear word; yet it is one of the 10 Commandments.
