Painting the Town Red

Are police really bringing felony charges against Utah players who (gasp!) painted the BYU “Y” red prior to a game? Apparently they are. This sounds like a terrible overreaction to me. If the news story is correct, someone (a BYU alum?) believes it proper to bring charges against these college kids, that could subject the nefarious Y-painters to up to 15 years in prison.

Of course, some punishment for the painters may be appropriate. Perhaps they should have to repaint (under supervision) a few Y buildings that are in need of a new paint job — these kids certainly know how to paint! It also may be proper to make them pay for the repainting costs of the letter. I’m sure that there are other potential punishments that would fit the infraction. But it seems clear that felony charges do not fit the infraction here.

Definitely an overreaction on the part of the BYU authorities and the local law-enforcement( prosecutors and cops) in Provo. At the most these guys are guilty of is some kind of a minor vandalism type of misdemenour charge, not a felony. Hope saner minds will prevail, and the U of Utah students will be sentenced to pay restitution by painting BYU buildings, of be sentenced to do some kind of community service as suggested by Bro Wenger.

Kaimi, mercy cannot rob justice, nay, not one whit.

I was suspended my senior year of high school for writing all over a rival school with sidewalk chalk. I’ll admit, we did a pretty thorough job, but we turned ourselves in after the principle threatened to expel the students who were guilt if they did not turn themselves in. It was a stupid move, no doubt, but did mercy rob justice because we merely got a week off? That scripture has always confused me because if mercy doesn’t rob it, I don’t know what does.

Anyhow, in the S.L. Tribune, a young lady wrote in and suggested that they make the Utah players paint the Y white, and sin the BYU fight song: justice would then be served.

Hmm, wonder about the EPA violation and whether the Y is going to go pink to red now everytime the white wash wears off.

Could be a long time change.

Austin, was that, perhaps, a Freudian slip rather than a typo: “sin the BYU fight song”?

    Professor Faulconer,

Ever since your PHIL 202 class, my hands haven’t stopped trembling, which makes it hard to hit the G-key! I’m joking of course, but I’m going to call this one a typo (you’ve read my papers, you know I do that frequently).
