With all this political talk, Christus Victor raises the important question: whom should the religious vote for?

On a related note, Lyle has been running several items about more-or-less the same issue, over at LDS 4 Bush.
I disagree with Lyle on some substantive issues, but I think he’s asking a good question.
Yes, but Lyle has conspicuously avoided the gaping free-silver hole in the GOP platform.
Actually Adam, I was hoping for a more sound metal position in the GOP or the DNC…perhaps Titanium? Uranium? Might be hard to use as actual currency, but… :)
Though it will reveal my ill-informed moralistic communitarian populism in a terribly embarrassing way, I must confess that I would have voted for Bryan in a heartbeat. Probably still would today, for that matter.
Russell: Bryan’s push for a (slightly) looser monetary policy would have done more than relieve the repayment burden of debt strapped farmers. It would have reduced the real purchasing power of those with fixed incomes — think civil war widows with government pensions — and have dramatically reduced in real terms savings demoninated in cash — think people who put their retirement in the bank rather than buying land. Economic populism and redistribution is all well and good, but it seems to me that the lets-inflate-the-currency-so-we-can-help-the-little-guy variety is pretty vicious.
Why not simply tax the rich?
In an effort to look much, much worse than Br’er Fox, I confess that I’d be inclined to vote for Bryan solely because of the Cross of Gold speech. It’s fabulous rhetoric, and over monetary policy!
The new Bishop of Camden, NJ (where I spent the last year of law school)…
has just announced he will not allow the NJ governor to receive communion in his diocese.
Note however, the story gets the Kerry part of the story wrong. O’Malley specifically said he would NOT give communion to Kerry; so Kerry has been going to a uber-liberal ‘Catholic’ church in Boston to avoid this problem.

Lyle,
I must admit, I’m dubious of these kinds of actions. It seems like a crass, politically-motivated move by certain politically conservative Catholic leaders.
Are these leaders also willing to withhold communion from Catholics like Rick Santorum, who voted in favor of the war in Iraq, despite the clear statements against the war by the Vatican? Or from Catholics who have upheld death-penalty legislation? If they aren’t — and I haven’t seen any indication that they are — then their actions appear to be more politically motivated than religiously motivated.
Kaimi: Excellent question. Great point. I couldn’t agree with you more re: theological consistency.
However, crass, politically-motivated moves seem to be the order, unfortanetly, of the day. E.g. In the Senate, we see staffers “stealing” or “unethically” obtaining memos…which memos detail illegal activities. Yet…only one scandal.
However, the moves of Liberation theology/leftists centered priests & prelates seem to be pretty much the same…just on different issues. If they haven’t chosen to focus on death penalty, war in Iraq,…ask them.
While we are talking re: consistency, perhaps sports & politics should rest on Sundays also.
Ok, maybe just sports, per the Pope:

And now the Gov. of Indiana has been uninvited to speak to a Catholic school because his moral views are not inline with those taught by the school.
Note…they make the same mistake re: O’Malley. Why o Why does the NYT go to such outrageous lengths to protect Sen. Kerry? Would they do the same if Pres. Bush were the Catholic? I don’t think so.
